Compounding in Crisis

CRISIS Logo Take Action

On the afternoon of February 27, legislation was proposed to radically shift regulation of pharmacy compounding from state boards to the FDA. This would include:

  • Giving the FDA broad authority over compounding, including the ability to do full inspections of compounding pharmacies.
  • Requiring physicians to document medical need beyond writing a prescription according to FDA specifications in order to prescribe a compounded medication.
  • Outlawing office-use compounding.
  • Outlawing sterile compounding from nonsterile ingredients. (**This would include Methyl B-12, IV Glutathione, IV DMPS and many more injectable items.)
  • Allowing FDA to outlaw narrow-therapeutic medications, slow release capsules and other drug classes. (This would include sustain released T3 capsules.)
  • Severly restricting out-of-state distribution of compounded medications, including to patients who live near borders, those in rural areas and vacationers. (**This would mean that those patients that live outside the state of Alabama would no longer be able to receive their compounded medications from Wellness Pharmacy.)
